Advent Stockings

I was busy filling these darling little stockings with all sorts of fun stuff last night.

Today marks the first of December and the Christmas countdown officially begins! I sewed these advent stockings for Avery's second Christmas (she was 2 months old for her first) and we've used them every year since. In the past, I've filled the stockings with little toys, stickers, and treats. This year I've decided to take an ambitious turn; while some of the stockings have treats in them, others have fun things "to do".

Here are some of the fun things we'll be doing as we count down the days to December 25th:
  • Sing a Christmas song
  • Bake Cookies
  • Share cookies with a friend
  • Donate 1 toy to charity
  • Write a love note to daddy
  • Draw a picture for a friend and mail it
  • Homemade Car Mat (thanks for the idea, Tracey)
  • Tea Party
  • Read the Christmas Story
  • Light a Christmas Candle
  • Christmas Craft
I hung the stockings from a cork board that normally showcases Avery's "art" in her room.

The stockings are really easy to make. Here's a template and a tutorial (Martha Stewart) if you'd like to try it. You'll need about 1/2 a meter of fabric or you can use felt.

Christmas Time's a Comin' and we're getting excited! Do you do an advent countdown of some kind? I've seen some really great ideas out there.

  1. Hung mine last night too - thanks so much for the inspiration, Sarah! I love yours on the cork board - very cute.
I don't have a list of things to do yet, but the kids don't know that. There is a (blank) paper with a countdown number sticking out of each one and they are giddy for all the surprises hidden within. I better make a list soon so it's not a daily dread to think of something before I go to bed :)

  2. That is so darling! I also love that you put things to do in the stockings. Christmas is as much about the things we do to make it special as the things we receive as gifts.

We have an advent tree that I bought several years ago. It's made of felt & has felt ornaments - 1 through 25. Each day, another ornament is added until Christmas. Audrey was very excited to set it up today!

  4. Those are so creative Sarah. Great idea! We went with Lego Advent Calendars this year... a huge hit, and we're hoping it keeps them entertained when they wake up at 5am! ;)
