Decorating the Back of Your Sofa

If your sofa sits in the centre of your room with its back to you, try breaking up that big, bare back with something. It usually looks better to push something up against your sofa or simply hang a blanket over the back rather than leave it bare (especially if the upholstery is a solid print/colour). The same is true of occasional chairs but to a lesser extent since they are smaller and come in brighter colours and bolder prints more often than sofas do.

If you have the space, a stylish console table or sideboard looks nice pushed up against the back of a sofa and provides storage or a place to set lamps, books, and other pretty things.

A low bench can work too. Keep a folded blanket on top and some stacks of books and magazines to break it up.

Two stools set side by side have the same effect.

If you're tight on space or want to keep the look simple, drape a quilt or blanket over the back of the sofa. This little change can go a long way! Perhaps you noticed the Hermes blanket above. Here are some armchairs that have been draped with blankets and fur throws. Very chic.

Pulling up a desk or writing table is a nice look too and very functional. A great way to fit a small office area into your space.

Here are two unique arrangements. The first has a small, round table with two stools. The second looks like it has two sofas placed back to back with a console table between them and then a round table and chairs pulled up to the sofa that faces us. What a great place for casual dining, reading or playing cards.

If you're like me, you're always looking for more nooks and surfaces to decorate. What better place than the back of your sofa! Pull up a table or bench or simply drape a blanket over the back. You'll be happy you did.
