Our eye tends to like a mix of pieces that have varying proportions. Mixing small and big is a great way to add visual interest to any space. It's nice when pieces relate to one another in complementary ways, but we don't want them to all be the same. Variety is the spice of life and an important (essential) part of decorating!
Throwing in something unexpected is a great way to keep things fresh and lively. It makes a space unique. An over sized piece of art paired with petite furnishings. A massive mirror hung alongside a collection of small, framed photos. A large chair set beside a small, diminutive table. A large lamp on a small table. The options are endless. Have a look!
In the end, it has to look "right", but it's fun to play around with various arrangements until you get it just the way you like it. Sometimes it's surprising to see how disparate pieces can work (and look good) together. Fun. Fun. Fun. I guess that's why they call it playing with scale!
