Curtain Call (Some Favourite Looks)

I will eventually be sewing curtains for our living and dining room areas. It's going to be a huge job since there are lots of big windows (which I love of course). I don't really know what I want yet, but I've got ideas in abundance. I tend to like a bold look whether that be achieved with unique detail, colour or pattern. Here are some current favourite window treatments. There's big & billowy, bold colour, chinoiserie, greek key, colour block, and others. I love the creativity and the fearlessness. So many of these styles have BIG impact.

There are so many great options out there. I think we'll leave the curtains to the last and then decide what we want at that point. I'm sure I'll have new favourites by then! You can't be decisive about everything, right?

Kitchens the French Way

When I think of a French Bistro Kitchen, it conjures up something like this in my mind. Classic elements, charming details, and of course some blue and white. The chandelier may be a bit of a stretch for bistro, but I had to throw it in there. You can never have too much sparkle! I quite like that Paris Metro Station Wall Banner too, and it's a steal at only $59! (at Black Rooster)

Then I go and look up "french bistro kitchen" and discover I'm right on track. This look is just so pretty.

Those cane chairs seem to be a must for this look, and did you notice the exact island I used in the last image? It's a good one. Available at Crate & Barrel. The chairs I used are from Serena & Lily

Magnifique! The French: Wonderful Food. Wonderful Kitchens.

Skirts of the Round Table

I realize that post title is completely lame, but you'll humour me, won't you? I'm having a heck of a time deciding on how and with what I want to skirt the round table in our entrance. It sits in the corner of our L-shaped stairs. So far there is very little colour in the entrance; it's mostly black and white. I have it in my head that I want some colour, but finding the right fabric is proving difficult. Because it's going to be a round table skirt, I need about 7 meters which could be costly if I chose something high end and on and on and on -- my brain spins its wheels.

So, I gather inspiration and hope that something will jump out at me as THE ONE. There are stripes, dots, checks, chintz, ribbon and fringe details, bold vs. subtle -- so many options to choose from.

I do have some fabric samples en route to me, so here's hoping I become enamored with one of them.

Today is date day with the little people. Now that's a good way to start the week! I hope your week starts out nicely too.

Lonely Walls

Yes, my walls are begging for me to hang something -- anything on them. Well, not exactly, but I've heard it said, "If you're going to have white walls, you need art." I think that's really true. I like my white walls, but I'm getting desperate to fill them up with something pretty. We've got enough white outside for crying out loud!

Until we can afford some great art, we'll start with inexpensive art prints (and I'll try my darnedest to get better at painting). I just ordered these prints. The first two are from The Pink Pagoda, and they will hopefully hang together in the GREEN mudroom.

These are Sarah Jane prints (love them!) for my daughter's room.

And then I got this one for myself (also Sarah Jane). I think it looks like my daughter, so it "speaks to me", and it will be a nice thing to keep by my bed or on my desk. My sweet, brown haired beauty.

I'm also eyeing something extra special on ebay, but I won't give you the details until I win it! I don't want any other bidders. Yes, I'm competitive like that (hee hee).

And thanks for this!

It's weekend time!

The Kitchen Gets a Rug

Our blue beauty of a rug just arrived this morning from Rugs USA. It was a really great sale and the perfect size for the floor space between our sink and stove/oven. I also like how it adds some colour and pattern to our fairly white, blank-slate kitchen. See here. See here. The kitchen gets a rug.

There's a bit of purple and brown throughout the rug and various shades of blue. It's still crinkled in places, but that will settle over time. I think it ties in beautifully with our floors and the cabinet hardware. For the price, it gets two thumbs up!

For comparison sake, this is what it looks like on the website. It definitely has more of a green hue to it in person, but that's partly the lighting in my photos. It does look blue in person just not quite as blue as what is depicted below.

Apparently, two of my barstools from CB2 were supposed to arrive today, but they ended up in Winnipeg and I got a galvanized trunk instead. Just a mix up between the two orders. Oh well. It's being sorted out and hopefully the stools will get here in a few days. The one is back ordered so it will arrive at a later date. Really looking forward to getting those in the place and then the kitchen is pretty much done.

I hope your day is going well. Thanks for the visit!

My Attempt at Masculine

Yes, that's right. I've tried my eye, hand, mad skillz (or whatever you want to call it) at creating a chambre homme. I will admit I tend to err on the side of girly glamour, so here is me working at something a little more masculine. A man bedroom fit for... well, a man! I realize the tiger print, velvet pillow is probably a stretch for some of the men out there, but I think it works beautifully handsomely. What do you think?

It's kind of hard to see the detail of the bedding, so here's a better look.

I would be most curious to know how I did, guys. Would this space work for you or am I way off? I have to say, this was really fun to do - a nice change from my usual, over-the-top pretty.

And here's where all the stylish stuff came from.

Let's Go Outside, Darling

These -40 C temperatures have got me dreaming about warmer days. Just as soon as the mounds of snow melt away we're going to be turning our yard of mud into a yard of grass, complete with a garden, fence and deck and hopefully a play structure of some kind (if all goes as planned). We'd love to do a patio and pergola, an outdoor fireplace, a secluded sitting area with a fountain, and the list goes on, but those things are down the road kinds of projects. This summer we'll focus on the basics.

Here are some dreamy outdoor spaces in the meantime. Black and white stripes are still a favourite, and I'm really liking the look of a black pergola. Le sigh.

Dream on. Dream on. Don't mind if I do.

Thanks for the new "likes" and "followers" over the last little while. You're all so sweet.

Hugs all around,

-Sarah
