While I'm soaking up some sun, I've asked a few blogger buddies to write some posts for me. Everyone is going to be sharing some things they've "Been Lovin' Lately". Anything from furnishings or design trends to fashion - whatever has caught their eye and tickled their fancy lately.

First up, I'm happy to have Andrea Johnson here from Andrea Johnson Design. I had the privilege of meeting Andrea at our blogger meet up last fall. Andrea is an interior designer in the Vancouver area. She's one stylish gal with a contagious smile.

Constrasting Seat Cushions

Happy Valentine's Day, friends! I hope your day is lovely and filled with at least a little bit of special. I don't have anything very Valentines-ish for you today. Sorry. Hope you can get your red and pink fix somewhere!

I've been dreaming about slip covering our sofa for a while now. It's a rather bland brown colour and I'd like something different. I still like the style of the sofa, but I'd like a fresh, non-brown look. I've avoided tackling the project to date though. To be honest, I'm a little intimidated by it and recently I've noticed a different kind of look that would be an easy out for me. The look I've spotted is sofas with contrasting seat cushions, where the seat cushions are a different fabric from the rest of the sofa. Here's what I mean...

Here's a banquette with the same look.

This could be something for me to try. It would be simpler than doing the whole sofa but would still give me that fresh, new look I'm dreaming of. I could even choose a patterned fabric if I dare.

What are your thoughts? It seems like a good place to start, and if I still find myself wishing for the full slipcover, I can always change things up down the road.

Artist: Bobbie Burgers

I spotted artist Bobbie Burgers' artwork in the recent House and Home magazine. Burgers is a Vancouver artist who studied art history at the University of Victoria. She also studied in France and likes to draw inspiration from that part of the world. She is known for her lovely bouquets and florals. So much flowery prettiness! Love it.

Her work has so much movement to it, filled with depth and texture. Some of my favourite blooms are peonies and tulips so it's no wonder these make me happy.

Hope they bring some cheer to your day too!

Delightful Details in the Kitchen

Happy Friday, everyone! Sorry I wasn't around yesterday. Life. Happens.

Here's a little collection of details done right in the heart of the home. Attention to detail is really important. It gives a space a pleasant, finished look. Creating a lovely vignette in a corner of your kitchen will make you smile and it's not all that difficult to do. Probably the #1 thing to remember is less is more. Be inspired!

Good styling doesn't have to be complicated. It can be as simple as a collection of white vases and pitchers or wood bowls and pottery.

Have a look around your kitchen to see if you can come up with a pretty arrangement of things. Have fun and enjoy your weekend!

New Trend Bubbling Up

A friend of mine, who has a bit of an inside scoop on design, recently sent me Oly Studio's latest light fixture. It's the Muriel Chandelier made from cast resin. "Bubble Lights" aren't anything new to design, but this is the first one I've seen that has an iridescent look to it. I bet it's really pretty when lit. (Too bad we can't quite see that from the picture.) The variation in the size of each bubble is also unique. Most other bubble fixtures have a uniform size to each bubble. It almost looks more like a cluster of grapes.

And then I was over at pinterest and spotted these bubble tiles. (These were all sourced through EVIT, an Italian tile company.)

I happened upon the work of artist, Linda Monfort, recently. Her style is abstract and impressionistic. She uses lots of bold colour and rich texture. Artsy Goodness...

Her work is available on Etsy. Each painting is original and quite reasonably priced. If you're looking to add some lovely artwork to your home, you may want to visit her shop.

That last painting is called "Walk with Me", and I could definitely go for an afternoon stroll in a a stunning landscape like that one. But alas, I'll don my boots and trudge through the snow instead. (Is it terribly obvious that I'm ready for a winter holiday? Sorry.)

Family-Friendly Dining

A new week begins! I hope you have a good start to yours. Things are better around our house as the puking has stopped and appetites are returning, along with restful sleeps and more manageable amounts of laundry.

I know I shared a design board just a few days ago, but I guess I kind of got on a roll and put this one together too. My goal was to create a family-friendly dining space that would have a casual and welcoming feel to it. I chose a rustic trestle table that looks worn (so what would it matter if it ended up with a few more nicks and scratches) and plastic Eames dining chairs. Plastic is perfect for the occasional spills that are inevitable with little kids around. So much easier to clean than upholstered chairs.

The space ended up having a bit of a nautical or cottage feel to it and those hicks pendant lights tie in really well with that kind of a look.

Coffee Table Styling

These days my coffee table is usually barren. Well, barren of anything ornamental and especially anything breakable. Of course there are often children's books, puzzles, crayons and an assortment of toys strewn across the top. At this stage of life it's just easier to keep the table clear of my stuff so I don't have to worry about it. I do like a well-styled coffee table though and there will come a day when I have one!

The most common way to style a coffee table is to artfully arrange a collection of lovely things. There are often stacks of books, pretty bowls or boxes, trays, candles, etc. Like this...

I've also seen people style the table with just one or two over sized objects. It's not as common but makes for a less cluttered look and creates a dramatic focal point. Like this...

Some "good-styling allies":

1. Trays. Use one or more depending on the size of your table. They're great for creating neat, organized groupings.

2. Decorative Bowls and Boxes. Tuck the remote away in one of the boxes.

3. Stacks of books and/or magazines. These look great on top of the table and even stacked beneath.

4. Candles.

5. Decorative Objects. It may be fun if they're a little quirky too. They make interesting conversation pieces, and a bit of quirk shows that you don't take yourself or your decorating style too seriously.

6. Flowers. The perfect addition to any space.

Contemporary Foyer

Here's my take on a classic traditional foyer design. You'll often see a wood, pedestal table and lantern in a traditional foyer. I chose a chrome and glass table that has similar lines to a traditional pedestal table but with a modern twist. The lantern I chose is also more contemporary. The pops of colour brighten up the space and of course there are a few pretty accents to add some sparkle.

I would love to come home to something like this. How about you?

Cozy Up Sectionals

I'm sorry I don't have much ready for today. I was up most of the night with my three year old who had a serious tummy bug. I've lost count but I think she's lost her cookies at least 7 times now! Ugh. I'm up to be elbows in laundry and just ran out of detergent... nice. Oh well. We'll manage. She seems better now which is good and thankfully no one else seems have the pucks. (Sorry for the gross details.)

I spotted this great sectional over at La Dolce Vita where Erica was sharing her dream home. It looks so cozy but stylish. Perfect for a family room.

I thought this space was nice too. Something a little more modern with a big city feel.

A large sectional is just the thing to cozy up on as a family. I'm sure my little people and I will have lots of cuddles today as everyone gets back to normal.

Well Rounded

Hello, friends. Just a few circular details that have caught my eye and tickled my fancy lately.

First up, oversized (and a little on the chunky side) knobs. Seen first in this pretty bathroom and second in Tommy Smythe's genius IKEA closet.

This pretty flush-mount fixture was featured in the recent House & Home magazine. It's modern with the perfect amount of sparkle and shine. Available through ET2 Contemporary Lighting.

I shared this living room with you last week featuring the stunning fireplace, but I'm also quite taken with the circle art. A simple but bold, substantial piece.

Notice the ring detail on the backs of the dining chairs. A little detail that goes a long way. The perfect touch that adds just a little more glamour to this formal dining room.

A round venetian mirror just makes me happy.

And aren't round windows so very special? A unique architectural detail that instantly amps up the style in any space.

To Trend or Not to Trend

Trends. They come and they go. Do you follow them? I've heard several designers say they don't follow trends, and I get that. I think it's a good idea not to be too trendy. I don't think of myself as a real trendy person either, but I will admit that like it or not, I am influenced by trends. It's kind of inevitable when I spend as much time as I do reading and writing about design. So, I've been thinking about how I can wade through trends as they come and still be smiling once they've gone.

1. Don't follow trends for the sake of being trendy. Instead, follow trends that you genuinely like. Don't go for a trend just because it's popular. Be honest with yourself and use good design judgement. Consider things like shape, texture, colour, balance, contrast, symmetry, etc.

2. This may seem like a contradiction based on the previous point, but be open to change and recognize that your likes and dislikes will change overtime. We of course have to leave room for this and not be too set in our ways.

3. Introduce trendy elements in "safe" ways. Go for trendy when it comes to hardware or lighting, not flooring. Switching out your kitchen pulls is a lot easier (and less costly) than ripping out and replacing your floors.

4. Focus on creating the look you love and don't worry so much about what others are doing. Following trends can be a little confusing at times and even frustrating. Let your own unique look and style shine!

5. Be informed about what the latest trends are but don't feel presured to follow them.

I hope that didn't come across as "I'm so beyond trends that I'm better than everyone else". Trends are part of design and I do like many of them. No, I won't follow a lot of them, but I appreciate new design. This was me sorting out things for myself. Have you had similar thoughts? Or maybe you disagree on some points. I'd love to hear from you too.

And a trendy bathroom to ponder. Would you love this for years to come, or would you tire of the swan faucets and chevron tiled floors? It's definitely a bold move.

Winter Wonderland

Hello, friends! Happy Friday to you all. I hope you have a lovely winter weekend. We're off to Elkridge Resort for some winter fun. The resort is just a short drive from where we live, and it's a great place to visit to enjoy some winter activities. There's snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, sledding, snowmobiling, skating, etc. The kids also like the pool in the main lodge.

Yes, winter can be fun and it is pretty if you can get past the freezing temperatures.

I'll make a snow angel for you!

No, I won't look this glamorous, but I will be smiling because I'm going to be having fun with my favourite people.

White with a Pop of Colour

So, I like white bedding. That probably won't come as a surprise to you. A simple white duvet or bedspread is so versatile. You can completely change the look of it by switching out the accent pillows or draping a throw over the end of the bed. We've had our white duvet for nearly 6 years now, and I still really like it. I haven't tired of it at all. It's a look I'll like for years to come!

With a simple, white canvass you can be more adventurous and trendy with the pillows you choose. Pillows are easy to switch up. Here are some accent pillows that add a pop of colour and some texture too!

Black and White Floors

As a young girl I remember visiting my aunt's house - an old home in need of some attention. There were some nice structural elements to the home; it had the kinds of details that give a home character and make it unique. I remember the kitchen having a black and white checkered floor. It stuck in my mind. Black and white checkered or diamond-patterned floors really make a statement. You may think it's a bold move but the look is actually quite classic. I think an entry or bathroom would be the perfect place for this flooring style and apparently others have had the same thought! (Ha)

I just might have to find a place to do this in our next home. Is it a look you would go for?

I had a chance to look through the recent issue of Rue Magazine, and really enjoyed Danielle Moss' house tour. Danielle is a graphic designer and photographer based out of Chicago. Her home is light and airy with a touch of romance and a slight vintage-vibe. It's welcoming, cozy and full of white goodness! (White is arguably my favourite colour.) Have a look!

Family Valentine's Table

Yes, you read that right. We celebrated Valentines at our house this weekend. I made a nice meal and set our table in red, white and pink. We celebrated early because the next few weeks are busy for us with lots of coming and going, and we'll be travelling on February 14th (Yay! Winter Holiday time!).

Here's a look at the table. It was simple but pretty. Ribbons down the middle. Three short vases filled with white roses (thanks, honey). "Cherish" notecards on the plates and heart-shaped place cards tied around the glasses.

I enjoyed making the table look prettier than normal. I think the food tasted even better too!

My Top Picks: Fireplaces

Hello and Happy Friday to you! With the bitter cold we've been having and the prospect of building a new home, I've been collecting some stylish and cozy-looking fireplaces. We don't currently have a fireplace, but we look forward to the day when we do!

I really like the look of a marble surround or marble walled fireplace. Using one or two large pieces of marble is stunning but using marble tiles can be really pretty too.

This first space is by Atmosphere Interiors (Saskatoon, SK). The marble is gorgeous and the grid panelling above is a lovely touch too. (A great way to accentuate the soaring height of the ceiling in this particular space.)

Erica of Moth Design had her fireplace faced in marble tile which is simply gorgeous and makes the fireplace the real focal point of the room. I would think this is probably a more cost-effective way to do it too.

Design by Angie Hranowsky. This is such a beautiful look.

Fireplaces with detailed mill work are also nice looking. They're classic with simple but strong lines. They usually have a mantel which gives you a nice spot to showcase some favourite objects. (Just leave out the TV in this first one, please.)

I also like the look of Victorian styled mantels in some spaces. They are pretty and I like it when people "mix things up" by paring the old world look of the fireplace with modern furnishings.

Oh, and I want to show you this one too. It has a sleek, modern look without the cost of marble or stone.

Inspire Me: Valentines Decor

I don't typically pay much attention to table settings, but a well dressed table is lovely and I was thinking I would do a family valentines table this year. It won't be anything real fancy, but I want to put some extra care into making the table pretty and showing my family how much they mean to me. So, I've been gathering a little inspiration...

Hopefully I can pull something off that shows my favourite people in the world how much they are loved.

Guest Room Sneak Peek

Hello, friends! I hope this finds you well (and warm if you're from my neck of the woods). It's even colder today! Anyhow, the guest room is coming along nicely. We really just have some finishing touches to add. Woo hoo!

We decided against a headboard and found this floral-inspired iron circle to hang above the bed.

It was $20 so you can't beat that and I like how it adds some "curves" to the space; it balances the straight lines of the white square mirror and the three square frames that have yet to be hung.

We're going to enlarge three family photos to go in the frames. We've chosen some older photos of when my brothers and I were much younger (and much cuter). The pictures also showcase some lovely scenery - places we liked to holiday as a family.

Here's a look at the bedside tables and lamp. I liked the pineapple lamp not only because it was pretty, but also because the pineapple is a symbol of hospitality and warm welcome. How perfect is that for a guest room?!

One little project I have to do is mount some seashells in this shadow box to hang on the wall. The shells were picked by my parents on Vancouver Island. My mom loves collecting shells and has them in vases all around the house. This will be a nice way to showcase some of the more interesting ones.

The shadow box will hang on the wall between the lamp and bed.

O.k. and then I have a few pillows to sew. We've chosen these fabrics.

The dot fabric will coordinate nicely with the sweet william fabric (curtains).

And the yellow lemon drop fabric will add a nice splash of colour that isn't red or brown!

And a reminder of what the sideboard and curtains look like.

So, there you have it! It's coming together. I hope I didn't bore you with the details. The room has become a real cozy and welcoming space. We can't wait to finish it up!

This is what we were busy with this morning... we pulled out the finger paints! Avery loves it, and I enjoy watching her create her works of art.

It's a little messy, but the paint washes off really easily. Luke is a bit young for this activity and he tends to put everything in his mouth (ewww), so thankfully he was content with his crayons and a colouring book.

When you get home, let's put on our rubber boots and kiss in a farmyard. XO

Microwave Drawer Oven... Clever!

Yesterday evening I spent a good amount of time chatting with a design-savvy cousin of mine. She and her husband have renovated several homes over the years and recently built a home. I had sent her our house plans and we went over them last night for nearly an hour! She had some great ideas and suggestions (she has fabulous taste). We ended up discussing the kitchen for quite some time and the subject of the microwave came up. Where do you put the thing?! She told me about the microwave drawer made by SHARP that installs under counter. I had to look it up today, and here it is!

The SHARP microwave drawer oven (as it is called) comes in either a 24" or 30" width. Both sizes will hold a 9x13 inch dish and have front-mounted touch controls that are angled up for easy viewing. They also feature an automatic drawer opening system which sounds impressive (although I'm not entirely sure how it works).

I had a bit of trouble finding an exact price on this clever, tucked-away design, but the cost seems to range from $500-$700.

Have you heard of these types of microwaves? I realize the price tag is a little high; there are simpler ways of keeping your microwave in hiding. It is a smart idea though!

I was delighted to come across the work of interior designer, Jenny Wolf, recently. Ms. Wolf is based out of New York City and worked for 5 years at Ralph Lauren before completing a degree in interior design. This statement sums up her approach to design:

"Her organic approach to design emphasizes the simple and often overlooked notion that a home should reflect the sensibilities of the people living in it, showcasing the things they love and have collected over time."

I like the relaxed and welcoming look to her design. She has a good eye for mixing styles, patterns, and textures.

A Look Inside "Pale & Interesting"

I ordered Pale & Interesting by Atlanta Bartlett and Dave Coote a few months ago, and I've enjoyed looking through it recently. The book's premise is to provide inspiration for decorating with whites, pastels and neutrals to create a warm and welcoming home. The overall style of the book's interiors leans towards shabby chic, rustic modern and country charm. The interiors are really pretty, and you'll especially like the book if you enjoy that rustic, country look. My main reason for choosing the book was the focus on whites and soft, muted colours (which I love). I have enjoyed the lovely styling as well.

Here's a sampling of what's inside.

I would say the authors were successful in achieving their goal in putting the book together - there's nothing too formal or serious about any of the spaces. The overall "lived in" look does create a welcoming feel, and the colour pallet is so simple and serene.

Styled Bookshelves

Creating well styled and interesting vignettes is certainly an art. It can be especially tricky to make bookshelves look nice. Rows and rows of books lined up one beside the other can be rather boring. It's nice to mix things up a little. I found some great inspiration over at Lonny. After looking over their collection of styled bookshelves, I've come up with a few tips for great bookshelf styling.

1. Trays, baskets and boxes (and even a vintage suitcase!) are your best friends.
2. Stack some of your books or magazines.
3. Top stacks of books with pretty or quirky objects.
4. Use heavy objects as book ends.
5. Lean art or framed photographs beside or in front of books.
6. Stand large coffee table books upright to display the book cover (third picture, bottom shelf).
7. Mix, mix, mix!

I hope that gives you some fresh ideas. Styling can be so much fun especially if you have some great inspiration to get you started!

Try Something New

A new year often brings with it the feeling of a new beginning or a fresh start. Not that we’re leaving behind anything nasty, but we get to slow down over the holidays and hopefully take time to reflect on the past year, while looking forward to the new year. It seems that most of us think about some of the things we’d like to accomplish, things we’d like to change or become better at, etc. Resolutions. Have you made any? I have a few things on my mind. One of them involves me being more creative/adventurous in the kitchen, and what that boils down to is me trying some new recipes!

While I have some momentum, I plan to try two new recipes this week. Here they are…

Sauteed Sweet Potatoes & Spinach

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 large sweet potatoes

1 1/2 teaspoons curry powder

1/2 cup water

1/2 cup red onion

1 1/2 pounds spinach

1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

Coarse salt and ground pepper

Directions:

Heat olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Cut sweet potatoes into cubes; cook, stirring, until starting to soften, 8 to 10 minutes.

Add curry powder. Cook 1 minute. Add water and chopped red onion. Cook, stirring, until water evaporates and potatoes are tender and browned, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a bowl.

In the same skillet, cook spinach in two batches, adding second batch when first wilts, 2 minutes. Drain; add to potatoes.

Stir in balsamic vinegar; season with coarse salt and ground pepper.

Time for an Update

Hello and Happy 2012! I’m sorry I wasn’t around yesterday. It was my intent to have something ready, but our internet connection has been spotty over the last few days… rather frustrating. We also had a late Christmas celebration with James’ side of the family yesterday (which we hosted). The prolonged celebrations have been keeping me in holiday mode, and I need to get back to real life!

I haven’t been completely idle over the holidays though. My head has been wrapped up in lots and lots of planning. This kind of planning…

I had mentioned a few months ago that we were thinking of building this coming spring/summer, and that is still in the works. We’ve connected with a builder we would like to work with, and a draftsperson is the middle of working on our plan. We’ve gone back and forth a few times now which is apparently quite normal, but it’s taking some time to get things just right.

I can’t tell you much about it just yet, but hopefully I’ll be able to soon! Just wanted to give you a peak at what it looks like inside my head these days.

I hope all is well with you, and I look forward to getting back to the blogging. Lots of ideas brewing to kick off the new year!

Living Room Layouts

Happy Monday to you! Last week before Christmas. This week's to do list is probably longer than usual for many of you, so I wish you all the best in stroking things off of it. Sorry for the late post today. I didn't get a start on it last night so it had to wait until nap time!

After chatting with a friend about her living room last week, I've had furniture layouts on my mind. (She has a long, rectangular living room that we thought would look best with two sitting areas.) Coming up with a good furniture layout can be tricky. Thankfully there are really no rules and the only limitation is your creativity. But it's always helpful to have a look at what the pros are doing. I found this article on House & Home to be really helpful. I was quite amazed at how different the space looked by simply rearranging the furniture. Here's one room, three ways.

The fireplace is the focal point in each of the arrangements, but you get a different "feel" from each space. The first has a more casual air. The third seems more formal. The second feels roomy and more asymmetrical with the mismatched coffee tables.

Here's a look at some more living rooms. First, a few rooms where symmetry and balance are prominent.

Large Living Rooms: Divide them up to create more than one sitting area.

Using a daybed in your furniture layout increases your options. It's a versatile piece because it looks good from any angle; there isn't really a front or back to it.

Yes, that was long, but (believe it not) not at all comprehensive. There's really no end to layout options you can come up with. Strapping Range Hoods

I'm not entirely sure what to call them, but they are range hoods and they have straps or decorative bands. Here's what I'm talking about...

They've likely been around in the past, but I hadn't really noticed them until recently. Perhaps they're enjoying a bit of a come back. I don't know. But what I do know is I like them! I especially like the idea of having mixed metals on one hood. This gorgeous mix of stainless steel and brass is a favourite...

The style lends itself to more traditional kitchens. Here are a few others I rounded up and then I want to know if you're digging this look as much as me!

This last kitchen is hot of the press. It was designed by Tommy Smythe, one of Canada's leading designers and featured in the most recent issue of House and Home. Tommy leans towards traditional style but always with a twist. He likes bold patterns (check out that floor) and strong colours (black, red, etc.)

Powder Rooms that Pack a Punch

Here's a trend that I can really go for: Bold & Glamorous Powder Rooms. I hesitate to call it a "trend" actually. Perhaps it would be better to call it a safe trend because I think it will be something we're comfortable doing for years to come. The powder room is a small room and I think we feel like it's less of a risk to be daring with a small, confined space. It's also completely stunning!

I had a chance to look through the portfolio of Martensen Jones Interiors the other day and loved what I found. Lisa Martensen and Jan Jones are the talented designers behind these beautiful interiors. Have a look!

Do you recognize some of the interiors? I certainly did but was delighted to find some new spaces as well. Lisa Martensen's home was featured in the recent Ivy & Piper mag. Several of the above images are of her home.

I really like the mix of modern and traditional this design duo achieves. Their choice and use of colour is also really tasteful. There's nothing too bold or daring about it, but it's still fresh and interesting. Design that will stand the test of time.

Guest Room Update

Hello and Happy Monday to you all! I wanted to give you an update on how things are going with the guest room in my parent's home. As I've mentioned, the sideboard is painted and I'm finally giving you a look at it! (Sorry it's taken me so long.)

We used Emperor's Silk Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. My mom did the painting, and she said both the paint and wax were easy to work with and we love the colour! It works perfectly with the curtains. A big thank you to Tara Jamieson of Lauren Lane Decor in Calgary for getting us the paint and giving us some "how to" tips along the way.

And here's a look at the new light fixture - a HUGE improvement on what was there previously.

Yep. The new fixture is definitely an improvement.

We've also added a bedside table and lamp to the room. Sorry I didn't snap a picture (bad blogger). We hope to get a bed in there soon and then we just have the decorative elements to finish up. At the rate we're going, it likely won't be completely finished for a while, but little by little it's getting done.

Christmas Wrapping

I happened to have a major productive evening last night. Yay! Wish those happened more often. Not only did I manage to stroke half of the items off my Christmas shopping list, but I also made some lovely, hand-stamped and painted gift tags. The productivity kick even continued over to today and I got some Christmas wrapping done.

I decided to paint some monogram gift tags for our families. The monogram will be layered underneath a stamped tag. I used gold fabric paint and just painted right onto some cream coloured paper for the monograms, and I used some old Christmas stamps and green ink to make the tags.

They turned out nicely, and it was a total spur-of-the-moment idea.

And here's a look at the wrapping I did this morning. It's all coming together!

The colours tie in beautifully with the tree, and I'm finally feeling more Christmassy. The fact that it's just around the corner feels more exciting than stressful now that I have a few things ready! How are your preparations coming along?

Sarah's House: Season 4

Did you get to watch Sarah Richardson's recent show? Sarah (along with her design sidekick, Tommy) tackled a new build project on season 4 of Sarah's house. They were able to get in at the beginning stages to make some changes and upgrades to the builder basic home. The goal was to make it less cookie-cutter looking and more custom/high-end.

I know many of you will have seen the spaces these two design geniuses created, but I thought it would be fun to have a look at the whole house now that it's finished. (I suppose this might be somewhat of a sneak peek if you're south of the border or elsewhere.)

Sarah and Tommy went with more of a traditional look throughout the house, particularly in the main living areas (kitchen, living room, and dining room.) Enjoy the tour and then let me know what your favourite space was!

Green & Gold

As I mentioned yesterday, we have our tree decorated with gold and green this year. I hadn't thought of it, but those were the colours of my high school. I played volleyball and our team colours were green and gold, although the "gold" was really more yellow. I don't think I chose the colours because I once wore them to play team sports. It likely had more to do with the inspiration I found in these lovely images.

You'll notice that shades of grey and black or often part of the colour scheme.

It's Beginning to Look a lot like Christmas

I got some Christmas decorating done over the weekend. We put our tree up and I added some Christmas cheer to the kid's play room. We went with a green and gold colour scheme this year.

Here's a look at our tree. (Does anyone else find it hard to get a decent picture of their tree?) The first image was taken at night; the second image in the daylight. And neither are very good, but they'll have to do!

A Few Lovely Armoires

Another week draws to a close. Christmas is drawing nearer and I really need to do some shopping! A friend asked me if I was done my Christmas shopping the other day, and I was embarassed to say that I hadn't even started. Starting to feel the crunch.

Advent Stockings

I was busy filling these darling little stockings with all sorts of fun stuff last night.

Today marks the first of December and the Christmas countdown officially begins! I sewed these advent stockings for Avery's second Christmas (she was 2 months old for her first) and we've used them every year since. In the past, I've filled the stockings with little toys, stickers, and treats. This year I've decided to take an ambitious turn; while some of the stockings have treats in them, others have fun things "to do".

I hung the stockings from a cork board that normally showcases Avery's "art" in her room.

The stockings are really easy to make. Here's a template and a tutorial (Martha Stewart) if you'd like to try it. You'll need about 1/2 a meter of fabric or you can use felt.

Christmas Time's a Comin' and we're getting excited! Do you do an advent countdown of some kind? I've seen some really great ideas out there.

Yesterday my hunny came home with an early Christmas present for me. Have a look...

Now, in case you're thinking that I'm a total techie who is always current with the latest and greatest, I'm not. This is my first iphone and (get this) my first cell phone ever! Yep. You heard that right. Anyway, my husband decided it was high time for me to carry a phone, and he thought it made sense to make it an iphone. That sounded just fine to me.

I've been having fun learning how to use it, and now I have something to do while waiting in line at the grocery store (as if keeping my kids away from the tic tacs, menthos and chocolate bars wasn't enough).

I picked up a case at Future Shop last night. I thought it should have something protecting it. Perhaps I'll change it up down the road.

So, I'm mobile now and liking it. Merry Christmas to me and thank you to my darling husband! (Smooch!)

I like the colours best when paired with a healthy dose of white, but black can also be thrown into the mix. Yes, black and blue do go together! (At least that's what the "rules are meant to be broken" people tell us.)

Some Thoughts on Black Friday

Hello and happy Friday... Happy "Black" Friday to those of you in the states. Did you hear about the lady who used pepper spray to fight off other shoppers at a Wal-Mart in California? Crazy. That takes the happy right out of it.

Greed. It's a problem we all have in some way or other. True, not many of us would resort to pepper spray; most of us are smart enough to disguise it. We make it look like something else to avoid facing the truth about what it really is - ugly, never-satisfied greed. Want, want, want. Get, get, get. (Guilty, guilty, guilty.) That pretty much sums us up.

I had planned to share some pretty armoires with you today, but they can wait. That would only make me feel like I'm feeding greed and materialism - something I really don't want to do. I hope you come to my blog for inspiration and ideas, but I hope I don't fuel the wrong things. Having a nice, comfortable home that serves you and others well is important, but keeping up with the Joneses isn't. Period. We are so materialistic in this day and age, and it's never popular to go against the current trend. I hope we'll try though in some way.

Today, the kids and I dropped off a shoebox filled with little toys, crayons, a bar of soap, etc. for Operation Christmas Child (Samaritan's Purse). It cost us $37 to fill the box plus a $10 donation. A needy child on the other side of the world will receive that box. That will likely be all they get for Christmas.

Perspective. I hope we keep ours in the midst of this craziness. Wasn't thanksgiving just yesterday?

Let's stop and give thanks, remembering how good we've got it. We certainly have it better than we deserve.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you south of the border! I hope you have an enjoyable, relaxing and thankful holiday. Most of you will be spending some time at your dining table, enjoying a fine feast. There's something about a shelf of books that welcomes you and entices you to sit down and read (or eat)!

Beautiful Brass

Ah... Brass. It's good. It's lovely. And these brass tables by Jan Showers are perfection!

And then there's this brass table available at Neiman Marcus. So stunning.

I also found these great styles at Baker. Lovely and Classic.

Brass has certainly enjoyed a recent comeback. You can bring it into your home in smaller ways if you're not digging those coffee tables as much as me.

So, are you big on brass these days too? I guess everything that goes around, come around. I remember my parent's having a brass bed when I was growing up. I really didn't like it, and eventually they got rid of it. Perhaps I'd feel differently about it now. The brass was very shiny and yellow though; I seem to prefer the antique or burnished brass look. How about you?

O.k. and just to make this post ridiculously long, look at these rather awesome DIY projects I found in my "travels".

Recipe: Black Bottom Cupcakes

As I mentioned yesterday, I had plans to do some baking (something I haven't done in a while). I'm a lover of all things sweet, but this particular cupcake is a true favourite. I haven't shared any recipes for a while, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to pass this one on to you. It's a real gooder! Kind of like eating cheesecake wrapped in chocolate cake. Tempting? I think so.

Black Bottom Cupcakes

8 oz. Cream Cheese, softened

1 Egg

1/3 C. Sugar

6 oz. Chocolate Chips

1 C. Sugar

1 1/2 C. Flour

1/4 C. Cocoa

1 tsp. Salt

1 tsp. Baking Soda

1 C. Water

1/2 C. Oil

1 tbsp. Vinegar

1 tsp. Vanilla

Mix the first 4 ingredients together and set aside. Beat together the rest of the ingredients. Half fill muffin liners or greased muffin tins. Add one big tsp. of cream cheese mixture. Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes. Note: Will fall when baked. Cool fully or will seem raw.

Yummo! Wish I could pass a few on to you. I guess you'll just have to imagine how good they taste, and then try the recipe for yourself!

Graphic Rugs

Graphic rugs are all the rage right now, and I can certainly understand why. They are bold, beautiful, and eye-catching without being too busy. There's a simplicity to them, but they're anything but boring.

I realize most of these pictures feature the rugs in living rooms, but that bold, graphic look can work perfectly in nearly any and every space.

Thankfully there are some good sources for handsome but affordable rugs. Here are some of my favourites.

Shades of Light (Most of these rugs are between $300-$400 for the 5x8 size.)

IKEA has a few to choose from too. (Prices vary from $30-$400.)

(I'm sure there are other great sources out there, but I'm still on the hunt to find them. Let me know if you know of a good source.)

And speaking of rugs, I've had it in my head that I just might want a Persian rug in my future kitchen. It would look something like this...

I think it really cozies up the space.

Top Swing-Arm Sconces

Friday it is! I cannot believe that we're over halfway through the month of November. Gosh! I have some serious tracks to make in my Christmas preparations. Haven't even started (unlike many of you... dear, super-organized friends).

Today I thought I'd share some stylish swing-arm sconces. I've noticed the swing-arm style popping up more and more lately. The most conventional place for a swing arm lamp is beside the bed, right? It's a good and practical place for this kind of lamp, but we seem to be breaking the rules a little and introducing swing-arm sconces to other rooms in the home, particularly the kitchen and bath.

I think it works quite well and adds a fresh, unexpected look. Here's a round up of a few favourite swing-arm styles.

Etsy Inspiration: Upcycled Furniture

I hadn't been over at Etsy for a while, so last night I took a few minutes to have a gander. I came across some rather fabulous upcycled furniture. It always amazes me what people can do to bring new life to old pieces.

The first seller I came across was Jo Supara Tarakci of Name Design Studio. This lady brings flare to the pieces she works with and has a special knack for patchwork upholstery. I must admit I wasn't a real fan of the patchwork look, but after seeing her work, I just might cross over to the other side. Simply gorgeous.

I also found Spruce Home based out of Austin, TX. They're overall look is definitely modern with a vintage feel. The piece that first caught my eye was this brown linen sofa with the Chiang Mai fabric on the front sides of the cushions. Chiang Mai currently enjoys widespread popularity so I thought you might enjoy this bright and bold look.

Just a little upholstery inspiration for you. Hope it gives you some fresh ideas and that extra boost if you're currently in the middle of a "make it new" project.

Simply Perfect. And if the statment lighting steals all the attention, perhaps no one will notice the dirty dishes in the sink. That would be even more perfect!

Designer: Christina Murphy

I had heard of Christina Murphy before but hadn't really looked into her work. I finally took the chance to go through her portfolio the other day. It turns out that several of her spaces have already been up on my blog. (You will probably recognize some of them.) I guess I liked her work but didn't really know it! I found myself saying, "Oh! She's the one who designed that bathroom and that bedroom and that..."

Christina is a designer based out of New York who I would say leans towards a traditional look, but knows how to mix in other design styles as well. I really like her bathroom designs; she often uses quite a bold or graphic tile pattern on the floor which is a nice touch. It works well in a bathroom since it's a smaller space.

Monday Ramblings

Hello and Happy Monday! Sorry for the late post. Our house looks like a hurricane blew through it; I suppose we could call it Hurricane Avery, followed closely by Hurricane Luke. We moved home Thursday evening after four months of transient living. We got in the door and in less than 10 minutes, the kids had pulled out nearly every toy they possess and spread them throughout the house, upstairs and down. I guess it was like rediscovering all their stuff; they couldn't resist getting their hands on all of it! Between the mess of toys, four suitcases, and piles of laundry, our house is a disaster zone. Thankfully, all that moving around is done for a while and we can settle back in our home.

So, a few updates...

#1 The sideboard for my parent's guest room is painted and it looks awesome! (Sorry I don't have a picture to share... soon!) Oh, and we got a new light fixture up too! Yay. We went with this one from RONA.

#2 My friend Stephanie, who is a scrapbooker extraordinaire, made these totally cute paper butterflies for Avery's room. She pinned them in a shadow box for us. I love 'em! You can visit Stephanie at her blog, Silver Boxes.

#3 This LOVE print from Jen of Made by Girl arrived. It's going to hang in Avery's room too once I have a chance to get it framed.

#4 James and I did a song at a friend's wedding this past weekend. I got to be Bryan Adams for about 4 minutes on Saturday. Ha!

I have some good stuff lined up for this week if I can get myself organized. Hope all is well with you. Off to tidy... something... anything. (Sigh.) Where to start...
